Perfecting Your Time Management Skills

As some of you know, I started a new job about a month ago. It’s been great so far, but my list of priorities has grown considerably since my second week! I’ve always prided myself as a great organizer and prioritizer in the past, but I was starting to get a little overwhelmed last week when I looked at the grand scheme of all the things I had to accomplish in a short period of time. Once I got back into the swing of putting my to-do lists together and tackling my tasks one-by-one, I started to feel confident in my abilities all over again. Since this is something that has recently been on my mind a lot, I thought I’d take this week’s blog post to provide some tips on structuring your list of priorities. Before you start, decide if you’re more of a digital or paper person (or both)! If digital, find a program or calendar app that works for you. If paper, invest in a detailed planner of sorts. Since I consider myself to be a little bit of both, I use Outlook on my work PC and iCal on my iPhone to set up digital reminders. My main go-to though, is my detailed planner that I bought from Paper Source. If you are a little old-school like me, investing in a good planner or scheduler is definitely worth it in the long run! Trial and Error Analysis: You Really Don’t Know Anything Until You Test It

I honestly can’t believe it as I’m saying it (or typing it I should say), but you are now reading my 100th blog post! Not only will my little pride and joy be turning two next month, but that’s 100 weeks of writing content, creating graphics, and sharing on social media. Before I go into further detail, I want to thank all of my followers and friends who continue to inspire me everyday! I personally have to admit, that I had many preconceived notions about blogging before I actually started. Well, I can tell you firsthand that I was proven wrong many times. Now the only way I was going to find out that I was wrong, was by actually being wrong. You can read industry best practices and take advice from consultants all day long, but at the end of the day YOUR data is where your particular truth lies. Don’t get me wrong, it’s best to start off by using the knowledge of other experts initially, but testing will optimize those findings even further! Getting Out of the Hamster Wheel Effect

This weekend it dawned on me; my daily routine has become so “routine” for lack of a better word, that it has made other areas of my life extremely messy. I took a look around my room and it looks like a natural disaster has hit it. On top of that, my backpack has become an abyss of random documents and my planner is so scarce that I wouldn’t be surprised is a tumbleweed popped out of it. I was never the most organized person I know, but in recent years I have had some level of organization in my life. Now I  feel like I’m completely lacking in any organization. Getting Back on Track through Organization

After getting through a rough period of your life, things can be messy. Literally. In fact, every great organizational system that I’ve come up with was due to something in my life that was previously disastrous. I still remember feeling all out of sorts during my very first semester of college. There were now so many assignments and exams to balance, along with expenses and access codes. I remember writing things down randomly, but I didn’t have a good way to keep track of everything that was being thrown at me. Why You Either Need to Be a Planner or Know a Planner

There are two different types of people in this world: those who like to plan and those who do not. Believe it or not, I didn’t always like to plan. I consider my old self to be quite the lazy procrastinator. So, what helped me change my ways? College did. I was always a good student, but my organizational skills were pretty terrible all through grade school. My class notebooks were full of mangled papers with illegible chicken-scratch on them, my planner was sparse with entries, and my backpack was a place that no-one in their right mind would try to sort through. Even though I got by with all of this disorganization, I was in a state of constant anxiety over my grades. I was always afraid that I was forgetting a homework assignment or missing valuable information from one of my classes. About a month before college started, I came to the realization that I needed to change my ways due to the higher stakes that were about to present themselves to me. Now I’m not saying that everyone needs to be as anal and paranoid about planning that I currently am, but if you’re not that way it doesn’t hurt to be close to someone who is.
