I’m writing to you with a little bit of shame weighing on my shoulders. It’s been over a month since I’ve written my last blog post, and I’m a bit disappointed in myself. I typically pride myself on never missing a week and making sure that I’m always prepared, but I’m not going to lie- I needed the break. Life got hectic, very hectic. Not just for a little bit, but honestly probably since about two years ago. Between upsets in my personal life, health, work life, etc. I was beginning to slowly lose my mind. Instead of confronting my problems head-on, I kept hiding behind the everything’s alright mindset. I continued cranking out blog posts even when I felt as bland as a ham and cheese sandwich. Now that a lot of my issues have either resided or solved themselves, I’m finding myself in this mental rut. Not just regarding the blog, but on EVERYTHING. What am I doing with my life? Am I where I need to be right now? How come some things have changed drastically, while some things never change? A tornado of doubts and worries storm up in my mind resulting in a physical, zombie-like numbness. After talking to many of my mid-20s counterparts, this turns out to be so common that it’s scary. Most change doesn’t happen overnight, so what can we do in the meantime to get ourselves back on the yellow-brick road to optimism, creativity, and excitement? I’ve been seriously thinking about this a lot lately, and these categories are where I think the answer(s) lie. Continue reading
First of all, I want to apologize for skipping last week! Things have been absolutely crazy on my end and I wasn’t able to get this out in time. I’ve gone over two years without skipping a week, so I felt terrible about it. Anyway, please enjoy this week’s topic!
Life changes are typically bittersweet when they happen. You can be in a miserable situation for a long period of time, and still be sad when change is finally taking place. Even though it’s one of the top 10 cliche sayings of all time, you really never know what you have until it’s gone. Now even though there were probably some positives in your previous situation, that still doesn’t mean that it was healthy or beneficial for you to maintain it. It can be hard to not reminisce on the good times and let those times influence your future. Like almost everything in life, these principles are pretty universal in the different areas in your life such as work, your personal life, school, family, health, etc. Even though I’m still learning on how to more easily accept change in my life, the following things are what have personally helped me as of late. No matter how Type-A or spontaneous of a person you are, you’ve probably had a plan at one point in your life that fell-through. Depending on how much prep work you’ve put into this said plan, you may have been pretty devastated when it derailed from your perfectly placed track. Just like you I’ve been there as well (many times). I think one of the toughest lessons I’ve had to learn on my own is that things often don’t go according to plan. Even though we live in a plan-oriented society when it comes to getting through college, getting a promotion at work, or even just saving up to buy a home, life doesn’t always see eye-to-eye with you. You may have done literally EVERYTHING right or as according to your plan as possible, but somehow things still didn’t work out. Even though this is a terrible pain to bare, you’ll eventually be able to move on and alternate your timeline and goals. Below are my tips for getting through this painful process.
We’ve all been there. Whether you’re attending a new school, starting a new job, or even adjusting to a major shift in your personal life- the beginning period typically sucks. Will the new people like me? Did I just make a huge mistake? What have I done? I’m pretty sure we’ve all asked ourselves these questions at one point or another. Even some of my fondest memories evolved from an initial rocky adjustment period. I look back at my time at San Diego Mesa College with rose-colored lenses, but I remember my first month there was rough! I was taking the bus, I wasn’t sure about two of my classes, and I barely knew anyone. A couple months later it felt just like home! It’s easy to lose sight of these things, but eventually we all adjust to what we consider a new norm. There have been many times where I felt like I was stuck in this unavoidable rut in life. What always had helped me in the past, was looking at things like they were short-term. Every semester in college I would count down the weeks until break and graduation. As the saying goes, “No pain, no gain.” Where I’ve always had a struggle, is when I feel this way, but there isn’t an end-date anywhere in site. So how do you get yourself out of this situation? Change can be good or bad, but either way it tends to throw us through a loop. I always equate change with the old saying, “When it rains it pours.” Even though this saying tends to refer to a sequence of bad things happening, I think it applies to sequences of good things happening as well. In my life I tend to go through many good changes at once, or many bad changes at once. Even though I prefer a series of good changes, life can become very stressful either way.
