As some of you know, I started a new job about a month ago. It’s been great so far, but my list of priorities has grown considerably since my second week! I’ve always prided myself as a great organizer and prioritizer in the past, but I was starting to get a little overwhelmed last week when I looked at the grand scheme of all the things I had to accomplish in a short period of time. Once I got back into the swing of putting my to-do lists together and tackling my tasks one-by-one, I started to feel confident in my abilities all over again. Since this is something that has recently been on my mind a lot, I thought I’d take this week’s blog post to provide some tips on structuring your list of priorities. Before you start, decide if you’re more of a digital or paper person (or both)! If digital, find a program or calendar app that works for you. If paper, invest in a detailed planner of sorts. Since I consider myself to be a little bit of both, I use Outlook on my work PC and iCal on my iPhone to set up digital reminders. My main go-to though, is my detailed planner that I bought from Paper Source. If you are a little old-school like me, investing in a good planner or scheduler is definitely worth it in the long run! First of all, I want to apologize for skipping last week! Things have been absolutely crazy on my end and I wasn’t able to get this out in time. I’ve gone over two years without skipping a week, so I felt terrible about it. Anyway, please enjoy this week’s topic!
Life changes are typically bittersweet when they happen. You can be in a miserable situation for a long period of time, and still be sad when change is finally taking place. Even though it’s one of the top 10 cliche sayings of all time, you really never know what you have until it’s gone. Now even though there were probably some positives in your previous situation, that still doesn’t mean that it was healthy or beneficial for you to maintain it. It can be hard to not reminisce on the good times and let those times influence your future. Have you ever heard the older generations complain about how rude and oblivious millennials and Gen-Z-ers are? Well even though you shouldn’t cast broad generalizations on a whole age group of people, they do have a point. Before you get defensive, please know that I too am a millennial. Even though I’m in my mid-20s, I attended Christian school for seven years of my childhood and worked in the service industry for six years of my young adulthood. Those might seem like random tidbits about me, but long story short it means I’ve been formally trained in the art of saying please, thank you, and I’m sorry. I probably over use these terms compared to the average human being due to the constant repetition over the years. Even though some might say that I’m too polite in certain situations, I have personally seen where it has helped me professionally and with each end customer I’ve ever interacted with. The problem in my opinion is that in modern times we’ve become so focused on new technology and innovation in the workplace, that we’ve lost touch with the human aspect of business. That may sound ridiculous, but many of the kind-hearted gestures associated with client relations are now considered to be “old-fashioned” or cliche. You’ve made a giant mistake. The panic sets in and your mind starts racing with guilt, fear, and self-hatred. You don’t know what to do besides start planning your own funeral, because you know you’re toast. We’ve all been there and it’s called crisis mode. I’m so sorry to make you go through this, but I want you to remember a time when you were in a stressful group project situation. I know, I’m pure evil. I’m sorry again, but I promise you there is a point to all of this. If you were one of the lucky ones, you had AT LEAST one other person who was also a team player (assuming that you were also a good group partner)! Those one or two people made you believe in the good of humanity all over again! Whether they saved you from getting chewed out by a client, failing your class, or just keeping your sanity, you were extremely thankful for their mere existence. Now what if I told you that this is your karma-filled moment to pass it on throughout the many areas of your life? It can happen anywhere. Whether you’re in the shower, taking notes in a long meeting, or waiting in line at Starbucks, you can have a creative idea suddenly creep into your mind. Even though these sudden realizations happen to many of us, most of the time we forget about them and are too busy to actually do anything with our newly found ideas. Now don’t get me wrong, sometimes these ideas shouldn’t be taken seriously or properly executed due to it not being a high-quality plan, but in other cases our ideas can be ground-breaking! It’s truly a shame when these are thrown out when they could have possibly changed the world as we know it. After having a few creative visions of my own that I never ended up pursuing, I recently decided to not let that mistake happen again. We’ve all been there. Whether you’re attending a new school, starting a new job, or even adjusting to a major shift in your personal life- the beginning period typically sucks. Will the new people like me? Did I just make a huge mistake? What have I done? I’m pretty sure we’ve all asked ourselves these questions at one point or another. Even some of my fondest memories evolved from an initial rocky adjustment period. I look back at my time at San Diego Mesa College with rose-colored lenses, but I remember my first month there was rough! I was taking the bus, I wasn’t sure about two of my classes, and I barely knew anyone. A couple months later it felt just like home! It’s easy to lose sight of these things, but eventually we all adjust to what we consider a new norm.
