Many of us have hidden passions or ideas that drive us forward and give us hope. Unfortunately, many of us do not take full advantage of these awesome ideas, and slowly push them to the back of our minds while we continue on with our busy routine-packed days. Even though it takes time, money, and resources to transition over to fulfilling our passions full-time, it’s possible to make it happen! Even though I can’t give you advice on how to get a business loan or how to seek legal advice for SMBs, I can share with you my plethora of digital tools and personal experience!
Start Shifting Your Priorities
Yeah I know this sounds like it should be obvious, but you’d be surprised just how many of us skip this initial step. Most dreams do not just happen on their own; they require nourishment and effort! You need to start asking yourself how badly you actually want this to happen. Believe it or not, it doesn’t mean that it has to be your sole focus, but it might need to move to the front of your mind instead of way behind everything else. For example, take a look at this blog. Even though I don’t make any actual money off of it, I make posting on it a weekly priority. I spend a couple days a week writing blog posts on my lunch breaks at work. Even though that probably sounds tedious to most people, I do it because I actually enjoy running a weekly blog. It’s also important for me to not miss deadlines! Even though keeping this blog up and running takes up a considerable amount of time, I’m still able to hold down a full-time job, spend time with loved ones, and enjoy some time to myself. It is a bit of a balancing act, but it’s something that I make work.
Build a Website
If you’re a selling a product or service, you’ll NEED a website. I know it’s amazing to be able to say that you built your website from scratch, but I’d suggest going with a WordPress or Wix site in the beginning for ease of use, functionality and range of support options. I’ve actually built my own website before, but I still host this blog on WordPress for the reasons I stated earlier. Both Wix and WordPress provide a wide range of themes and plugins that will allow you to have a beautiful and practical website for people to learn more about what you do! If you plan on selling your products and services on your site, I would suggest looking into Shopify, Big Cartel, Etsy, or any other e-commerce hosting provider. Either way, you MUST have 3 sections: your home page, an “about us” page, and a “contact us” page. In my opinion these are vital to the digital world of business.
Start Saving with Budgeting Tools
Unfortunately, it really does take money to make money. I’d suggest that you start saving now (little by little) and putting that money in a separate bank account for starting your business. This might mean that you’ll have to wait a year or two before you can get your wheels off the ground to get this dream of yours running, but trust me it’ll be TOTALLY worth it. If you don’t have enough willpower to put money aside each paycheck and need a little help, check out budgeting apps such as Mint or Wally, or you can use a planning tool such as Evernote or Panda Planner. I know saving up can be a total drag, but coming from someone who has had to tap into her savings lately, It’s worth it!
Create Printed Media with Vista Print
Not everyone is a graphic designer and in today’s world that’s okay! If you need small things done such as business cards, coupons, or promotional flyers you can just create them yourselves with Vista Print! I personally love vista print for many reasons. Even though I’m fully capable of creating my own business cards, I trust Vista Print to print them correctly and to deliver them to my house in a timely fashion. You can even get your logo printed on random gear and apparel if you want to for a decent price. Even though digital media is incredibly important, there is still a need for print in today’s world! So go ahead and explore their site and you might be able to do all of your physical promotion in one stop!
Start Creating Social Media Accounts and Post to them with Hootsuite
In today’s world, there is absolutely no excuse for your business to not have a presence on social media. You can create a Facebook page, Twitter account, and Instagram account in minutes. I would try to have your account names, logos, and branding in place before setting these up so that there’s nothing holding up the process. Now this is the very important part: DON’T FORGET ABOUT THESE ACCOUNTS! So many businesses will create accounts just to completely abandon them and never post content on them. This just looks bad to your social media-savvy users. Not only does it look like your brand isn’t doing well, but it also makes you look like you simply don’t care. Instead of letting this happen to you, you should check out Hootsuite! Hootsuite is a free tool that helps you schedule out your social media posts in advance. If you need more functionality than the basic package, there are affordable premium packages as well.
I encourage all of you to tap into your passions and start creating magic! Feel free to ask me any questions or just to tell me how your journey is going! See you next week!
